No More. It's the Law

The Liquor Licensing Act aims to ensure that those who consume alcohol only do so in a responsible manner. Rooty Hill RSL Club is committed to the principles of responsible service of alcohol. All employees must adhere to the following responsible service of alcohol practices, below is an extract of Rooty Hill RSL Clubs policy on Responsible service of Alcohol:

  • No liquor will be served to minors (under 18 years of age).
  • No intoxicated persons will be admitted to the Club.
  • Intoxicated persons will be refused service of liquor.
It is not only your right to follow the above principles; it is your obligation. Determining whether a person is intoxicated is not as easy as one may think. It is important to watch for signs that someone is becoming intoxicated, but common sense is also required. As well as mood and demeanour, and the number of drinks consumed, look for the following:

A notable change in behaviour, especially antisocial, inappropriate or violent behaviour, use of abusive language

  • Slurring of, or mistakes in speech
  • Clumsiness, knocking things over (like a drink or ashtray), or fumbling with change
  • A significant loss of co-ordination (usually swaggering or swaying)
  • A degree of confusion, a lack of understanding or ability to hear, and a difficulty in responding
  • Physical illness such as vomiting

Responsible service of alcohol is becoming increasingly more relevant and you should be aware that serious offences are handed out to both licensees and individual bar employees who don't adhere to these guidelines.

In NSW the current applicable penalty is a maximum $5000 fine for the following offences:

  • Permit intoxicated or indecent or quarrelsome behaviour on licensed or registered club premises
  • Sell or supply liquor to intoxicated person on licensed or club premises
  • Sell or supply liquor to a minor

BetSafe

BetSafe is an initiative of the BetSafe Group (a coalition of 41 registered clubs and hotels in NSW and Canberra).

BetSafe aims to cultivate an environment which opens up avenues for people to come forward before they hit crisis point, in other words create a safety net approach. We all acknowledge the recreational and social side to gambling but need to be more than just mindful about the group of people for whom gambling becomes anti-social.

Each BetSafe program has been specifically devised and fully implemented to be venue specific while still providing a uniform approach.

Since its launch BetSafe has:

  • Delivered staff training to over 8,790 BetSafe staff & management
  • Counselled over 529 staff from BetSafe Clubs
  • Counselled over 2,155 patrons from BetSafe Clubs
  • Assisted with 643 self-exclusions from BetSafe Clubs
  • Taken over 3,000 calls from BetSafe Clubs regarding possible problem players
  • Distributed, displayed and /or maintained over 400,000 signs, cards, pamphlets and posters

The Minister for Gaming & Racing, the Hon. Richard Face MP officially launched BetSafe at Western Suburbs Leagues Club, Newcastle, on Thursday 10 December 1998. At the launch the Minister endorsed the BetSafe program and stressed that the entire Club Industry needed to implement a RSG program. "BetSafe is a shining example of patron care and will prove to be for the betterment of the entire Club Industry," the Minister stated.
